A Thought

In 9th grade I played the role of Cinderella in our High School musical. To this day I can still sing the songs written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Songs like “In My Own Little Corner” and “A Lovely Night”. One song in particular brings a smile to my face. This is the song that Cinderella is singing by herself the night of the ball. She longs to go to the ball, but she doesn’t have anything to wear. She longs to dance with the prince, but she is relegated to stay at home and clean. She has been told that what she longs for is IMPOSSIBLE for her.

Then her Fairy Godmother appears and questions Cinderella’s way of thinking. The Godmother points out that impossible things are happening every day. It takes a little while, but Cinderella begins to join in and consider what might be possible. She sings and dances with her Fairy Godmother. Magically the pumpkin transforms into a golden carriage, four white mice into horses, and Cinderella’s work clothes into a gown. Cinderella is going to the ball after all. The impossible became possible.

Where are you when it comes to possibility thinking? Do you wonder from the perspective of impossible or from what might be possible? I believe the Fairy Godmother represents the “what might be possible” side of life. While, initially, Cinderella is stuck in stinking thinking and can’t imagine past her current circumstances. It takes someone from the outside to shake things up so Cinderella can start imaging new possibilities for herself. Turning the impossible into the possible.

An Invitation

While I’m not a Fairy Godmother, I do ask my clients to think about what’s possible. Believe it or not, many people find this hard initially. They have been thinking one way for so long that they no longer even realize it. Something shifts in my clients when I invite them into possibility thinking. The air feels lighter, the energy picks up, and ideas start flowing. It of course takes more than just thinking to make changes, but our thinking directly impacts our doing. Together, we partner to turn possibility into reality.

This week, I invite you to consider an area of your life or work where you want to make changes. Notice if there is resistance. Take a deep breath, acknowledge the resistance, befriend the resistance, and tend to the resistance as you both explore together. If you’d like to experience a shift from impossible to possible, schedule a complimentary call with me. How can you know if it works until you experience it? What could a call make possible for you?
